Pastel Portrait by Mary Hares, 1910
Reverend James Caldwell
A True Patriot
1734 - 1781
One of General Washington's finest, James Caldwell was born in Cub Creek, Virginia on April 14, 1734. He was the seventh son of Margaret and John who were Scottish-Irish settlers.
Both he and his wife Hannah met violent deaths. They were just two of the many victims who fought for the cause of the United States of America. Nine of their children were left in the hands of dear friends.
James Morgan, the man who's single bullet killed James Caldwell almost immediately was arrested, tried, and hung on January 29, 1782 for the murder of Reverend James Caldwell.
